Can no longer download PDFs, advice &...

I work in an office with a Mac that has OS X 10.4.11 (400 MHZ Power PC G4).?I have Acrobat Standard version 7.1.3, which is horribly outdated, but finances only allow for free upgrades.

A month or so ago I was no longer able to download PDF files, and at times my work requires me to download various government forms. I had Adobe Acrobat Standard 7.1.1 when the trouble started, but was able to download free upgrades to the present Acrobat 7.1.3.

My favorite browser is Safari 4.0.3, and when I try to download a PDF in Safari I get a nearly blank screen, but in the upper left hand corner is a small blue box with a question mark inside.

A few months ago I downloaded Firefox 3.5.3, and for a time that worked well, but now when I open Firefox and attempt to download PDF files I get a blank screen, and up in the gray bar area (where saved websites are shown) I get what appears to be the web address for the particular PDF file, but the download isn't there.

This computer also has Internet Explorer 5.2.3, and I believe higher upgrades aren't available for Macs. I started working here in 2005, and even back then Explorer didn't work well, it seemed to only half-open a website. (My terminology is bad, I don't know how to say technical things properly.) For years I've been ignoring Explorer, but just to see what would happen, today I opened Internet Explorer 5.2.3, attempted to download a PDF form, and it more or less worked. I went to the IRS website, downloaded a 1040 form, and was able to fill in the blanks. I then went to our state Revenue website, was able to download tax forms, but wasn't able to fill in the blanks. I don't like Internet Explorer, but if it was possible to get a free upgrade that would work with Macs I'd download it, just to have access to needed PDF forms.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to once again have the ability to download PDFs while using Safari or Firefox? I posted a question on a Safari discussion forum, but didn't get any answers. I've spend the?last couple of weeks checking out this Adobe site, found several questions about PDF downloading problems, but haven't come across an answer.

Anyone who can offer help will have my undying gratitude.

Can you Control%26gt;Click on a link to a PDF and download it that way?

Can no longer download PDFs, advice %26...

Dear Graffiti,

I just had a chance to play around with the control%26gt;click suggestion. When I'm in Safari and get my ''blue question mark in a box'' I can control%26gt;click the question mark, choose ''save image to the Desktop'' from the drop down menu, and get the form to download. Unfortunately the fill-in form is in Preview, and not Adobe, so I can see the form and print it out, but I can't fill in the blanks.

When I did control%26gt;click on the form name at the website, instead of getting my blue question mark I got a different drop down menu. One option was ''download linked file''. That seemed like a possibility, so I clicked that. I got a message that went something like this ''view.asp.html is an application. Are you sure you want to open an application?'' (or maybe it was create an application) Anyway, I didn't want to mess around with applications for each PDF file I try to open, so I canceled that.

I tried control%26gt;click in Firefox and in Internet Explorer, and discovered that the reason why Explorer had been sort-of working before is because it had been opening the forms in Preview when I was just clicking.

So control%26gt;click gives me different options, but I'm not able to figure out how to download the PDFs into Adobe Acrobat, which is how it used to work.

It sounds like your file associations for PDF's need to be changed. After you save one to your desktop (or somewhere on your hard drive) Control click on it and go to Get info%26gt;Open with. Choose Acrobat or Reader (either will work) then click the Change all.. button. See if that works (be sure and restart browsers...etc).

Do you have a link to the site and the type document you want to download. It could be an xml based PDF which only Acrobat PC is capable of editing and filling out. I had this happen on a State Government form. I had to save the form as a PDF in Acrobat Mac order to use it.

Maybe GRaf or me could go to the site and see if it a site problem or a defect on your Computer.

In the mean time: Go to my website Click Here and go to the section on recipes. almost all the document s are PDF. Try to download and/or save the PDFs.

Not this is not a comercial site. Its a Site I created. There is not an really personal info on it except in Personal_Bio and even that is not sensitive in nature, other than Family tree stuff. And the recipes are either antique, or submitted by Family, friends or friend of various members of Family.

Dear Graffiti The Wonder Worker:

Wow. After at least a month of trying to figure out what to do, I got a fill-in-the-blank PDF file to download and let me fill it in. I control%26gt;clicked to get my ''blue question mark'' to be saved to the desktop. Then I control%26gt;clicked once more, and it opened in Adobe Acrobate. I filled in every space, just to make sure it really works.

One small question. Where do I find the ''Change all...'' button?

Dear Phillip Jones,

Thank you for your offer to help. I clicked on your website and was able to download and open the recipes using Graffiti's control%26gt;click information. So I believe I'm close to getting this mess straightened out. Alas, this happens right after I learn that my job will be eliminated before next January! However, when I leave I'll take a list of all of the best discussion forums I've found. If I don't find another job that comes with a Mac computer, I'll save the sites in case my own ancient not-on-the-Internet Clamshell eBook comes down with some ailment.

When you do a ''Get Info'' on a file a window will open with the System Information. Click on the triangle next to Open With and make the changes necessary there.

Graf needs a pat on the back once in a while he is a good man.

Maybe this will Help choose a PPDF Flie Then select (one click) the chhose from File menu get info or Command (apple key)-I:

Now go by the pictures here as an example:

Okay, I've just about got this PDF stuff figured out. I haven't yet awarded my final Helpful Reply, and the grand prize of Question Answered until I sort through all the replies.

I found the Get Info by clicking once on a downloaded PDF (after incorrectly opening the file a couple of times, which gave me the wrong drop down menu), clicked ''Open with'' and then ''Change All...'' and now all of my files downloaded to my desktop open up in Adobe. Hurray, I can fill in the form, which is what I'll need to do if my boss tells me to do so.

However, I still get the ''blue question mark'' when I first click the form name at the government website. I am now able to control%26gt;click it to the desktop and then open it into Adobe, but I was wondering if there was a way to do away with the ''blue question mark'' stage. If not, I'm thankful for what I've got.

What Browser?

  1. If Safari Try the following with Safari turned off.
  2. Go to either : Library %26gt; Internet Plugins, or Username
  3. Locate the adobe PDF Viewer Plugin (or adobe PDF plugin)
  4. Remove from directory Place in trash.
  5. Empty Trash.
  6. either open Acrobat or Reader (this step doesn't make a difference which is open).
  7. go to help menu and choose repair installation, click.
  8. select PDF viewer. (it only works with Safari).
  9. Click okay.
  10. Now open Safari go to site, see if you still have the blue question mark.

If your using anything other. Do the following:

Follow 1-5 above then

  1. locate on internet Pdf Viewer by Schubert.
  2. Dowload
  3. open .dmag (dimage) file
  4. then open the file icon on desktop
  5. Move the viwer plugin located inside to internet plugins Directory (Folder) within the Main Library. This makes it available to All?users not just a given user.
  6. Now open FireFox, SeaMonkey,iCab, Opera, OmniWeb or whatever Browser your using (even Safari) and see if you can see the PDF with out the blue question Mark

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my last post. When I went to Library I wasn't able to find Internet Plugins, but that's okay. As long as I can control%26gt;click on my blue question mark and get a usable PDF form I'm satisfied.

I will award you my last ''helpful answer'', and give one of Graffiti's posts the ''question answered''.

Dear Graffiti,

I apology for taking so long to award you the ''question answered'' points but things got a little hectic at work, and I didn't have a chance to get back to this forum. A few minutes ago I downloaded a PDF government form just to make sure the control%26gt;click magic still works. I am still able to open up the form and fill in the blanks. Wow, life is good in computer land.

Thank you so much for your help.

No worries.

I'm not real big on the point system anyhow. Glad everything is working for you now.
