how can you force pdf to open in reader...

We wish to deliver completed tax forms with sensitive data to self service users but are aware that pdf files opened in IE are cached in temporary internet files, where they can be later retrieved, posing a security risk.?Is there a way to force pdfs to open in Reader, or better yet, prevent them from being opened in browsers, particularly IE (both 7 and 8 store the cached file)??I have already checked the registry setting default value for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and it points to the Reader executable.

Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas.?Ken

Hi Ken,

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals]
''bBrowserIntegration''=dword:00000000

This setting disables browser integration and the .pdf files will open in Reader instead the browser.

To enable integration change setting to 1.

Or when you install Reader use the following:

msiexec.exe /i AcroRead.msi /qn DISABLE_BROWSER_INTEGRATION=YES

I hope this can help you.

Best regards

Thanks roz.?I had to add ''bBrowserIntegration''.?Setting the value to 1 does indeed enable IE integration, but setting it to 0 caused nothing to happen (the screen jumps a little bit like it is going to open a new window, then nothing.?Control remains with the current window.)?This is similar to the results of the other registry key changes I've tried.?Any further suggestions?

Hi Ken,

did you try it with administrative privileges or normal user account? For me it works with admin account only.

And what happens when you change settings manually in Adobe Reader?

(Edit - Preferences - Internet - Display PDF in browser)
