Best SEO method for using images as...

Im trying to consider accessibility and SEO but I really want to use images for my header and menu items.

Is this the best method to do this? It lists some other methods underneath but im wondering if there is a recommend solution.

http://stopdesign.com/archive/2003/03/07/replace-text.html

A simple example of the method is here;

http://stopdesign.com/img/articles/replace-text/ex_hello.html

A span is put around the menu item and set to display none. A div is put around the span, with a background image and height value.

Ive also heard about this method, which allows you to use cutsom fonts, and id rather use images.

Why not use background images using unordered list menus as we discussed in a different thread?:-)

This is one of the better tutorials on how to do this - easy to do and accessible as well:

http://www.projectseven.com/tutorials/css/uberlinks/

As for headings, yes you can use images, just make sure you use the 'alt' attribute.?Something like this:

?%26lt;img src=''79267-org.jpg'' alt=''place a good description of the image here'' width=''113'' height=''91'' class=''imgright'' /%26gt;

You can also use the 'title' attribute with images:

%26lt;img src=''79267-org.jpg'' alt=''place a good description of the image here'' title=''something can go here also'' width=''113'' height=''91'' class=''imgright'' /%26gt;

REALLY OFF TOPIC?:-)

Thanks for the tutorial link Nadia. Interesting and ill read their other ones when I get a chance.

Its only for background images though, the tutorial doesn't let you use non standard fonts. I still need to use images in the menu to get the effect I want.

Ill set the alt text and title of images. Should I also have a text link which set to display:none, like this tutorial?:

Thanks Nancy, will do.

It made me think of something else though. Ive used Joomla and some generated text on the page you cant get rid of through the admin. To save myself having to go into the code, if their is a unique div around it i hide these elements with CSS. Its just for aesthetics, if they appear on screen readers, etc thats fine. However, will having hidden text like this upset google?

Thanks

Without knowing what you're hiding within Joomla pages,?I can't offer much?advice except to err on the side of caution.
